The Readers' Choice

For our very first interview, we are proud to present someone who is known throughout FoLCdom as the Queen of Feedback. She is one of the most consistent naggers, cheerleaders and feedback-givers around, and she’s loved universally for it. Her trademark short but to the point notes are valued enormously, as is her diligent nagging of authors whose muses have gone into semi-retirement. FoLClore has it that if she ever wrote a fanfic, the comment folder on Zoom’s boards would be the longest ever seen in the fanfic folder.

It’s our pleasure to introduce our first guest on The Readers’ Choice:

Merry

Whereabouts in the world are you?
Houston, TX, USA

How long have you been a FoLC?
Since the beginning of the series in 1993

What drew you to Lois and Clark?
I've been a Superman fan since I was a child and used to watch serials of Superman at the Saturday morning movies - before George Reeves. And I've always liked a love story.

When did you first discover fanfic?
In 1997 or 1998-don't remember-When I first discovered it on the net.

What's the very first fanfic you read? Do you remember what your first thoughts were about the concept of fanfiction?
I don't remember the first fanfic- I think it was one that had a continuation of an episode. I thought that the fanfiction was great. I got to continue reading L&C even though it was going off the air.

What are your favourite sites for reading fanfic?
Zoom's boards and Anne's place for nfic now that most of the stories are consolidated in one location. I like the archives - but I've read most everything there and most of the new stories are at Zoom's prior to the archives. I do check to see what's been updated once a week. Occasionally I wander to fanfiction.net.

I've found that most of the individual sites have their stories at Zoom's or the archives.

List some stories you'd recommend to other readers.
One of my first all time favorite stories is Meet Me in Kansas City by Chris Mulder. I loved Sugar and Spice (nfic preferred) by LabRat. Starfire and Sunstorm series by Irene. This is hard - there are so many - just about anything by Wendy Richards, ML Thompson, BB Medos, LabRat, Pam. The Only You series by Margaret Brignell. The Recognition series by Carol Malo. And the newer authors- Gerry, Carol Moncado, Missy, Kaethel, Raconteur. You get the idea - too numerous to mention.

A new story goes up on the Archive or MBs. You drop everything - and we mean *everything* - to read it. So who would it be by? <g>
Any and all of the above plus.

What type of stories do you most enjoy reading, and why?
Romantic- I'm a romantic at heart.- I guess the discovery of L&C love and revelation.

What's your opinion of:
Drama? I like a good drama-I don't care for rape or mind bending (brainwashing) type whams.
Action? I like good action
Romance? My favorite
Tearjerkers? As long as you don't keep them apart for long periods of time,
WAFFy vignettes? I always enjoy these.
Elseworlds? These probably are my second favorite types of L&C stories.
Alternate Universe/Beginnings? I enjoy these also
Other (if we've failed to include your favourite type, here's your chance to set the record straight <g>)? I like just about everything L&C. I'm not a big fan of death fics.

Can you choose one, possibly two, stories you'd consider personal favourites, and tell us what you like about them?
Meet Me in Kansas City- because it was my first favorite that I read and it had a combination of wonderful waffy highs and tearjerker lows that did not take forever to get straightened out by communication. Most of the problems L&C have is due to lack of communication, which is what makes a lot of the stories. Sometimes I think that is carried to excess. Not always though.

I also loved It Happened one Super Night/It's a Super Life stories. It's waffy and a tearjerker and shows the L&C development and revelation.

Has everything been done in L&C fanfic? Are there any unexplored scenarios? Or doesn't it matter? <g>
Probably not. As long as you wonderful writers have imagination - there probably is more to be written.

If you could be your favourite author's personal Muse, what would your dream story premise be?
I honestly do not know.

In your opinion, what makes for the best story? What ingredients, in your opinion, are essential to your favourite type of fanfic?
Romance, a few tears, revelation, some action or drama

Any other comments you'd like to make?
I'm sure I've overlooked something But you’re asking my favorite stories, etc. just can't be done. I hope my answers will help you.
